  1. Pick a well defined dataset with known properties (nature of data and where to get it), and
  2. Understand how government copyright works in India vs the US, in theory and in practice.

      Train names, numbers, schedules from the Indian Railways.

      It's quite ridiculous that the Railways do not have a public API and prevent redistribution of this information they make available to parties through a ridiculously pricey contract.

      Here is one place where we can find the statistical year book of India with lot of data in excel sheets about the various sectors of India: http://mospi.nic.in/Mospi_New/upload/SYB2013/index1.html

      This can be a helpful place on how to make data relevant apps. http://www.freebase.com/

      That is a good one. Electoral roll data is often published as PDFs, so there is data to work with.

      This information can be obtained from state election commissions using RTI in digital form by depositing nominal fee. Almost all political parties get it too.
